Statement of Artistic Intent

I am inspired by ancient sites and the architectural ruins of past civilizations. My stone sculpture and assemblage artworks are influenced by images of the past.  It is important to me to contrast the broken, ruff texture of stone fragments with contrasting polished marbles and onyx, with their beauty expressing a hope for a more prosperous future. 

I use my assemblage sculptures, which incorporate stone and antique objects, to express my feelings about different subjects or to tell stories through subtle references.  It is my hope that the viewer will access the artwork and discover its meaning through their universal human emotions and references from their past.

Artist Biography

Stone carver, Carolann Haggard, began as a teen, traveling extensively in the countries of Europe, Egypt and Mexico, where she was fascinated with archeology, and how stone was used in antiquity and architecture. She was determined that one day she would return to her favorite place, Tuscany, Italy to create her artwork and sculpture. Carolann’s dream came true in the ‘80s when her successful sculpture career in Chicago allowed her to work in Tuscany in the famous stone studios beneath the marble mountains. 

While living in Italy Carolann was drawn to the antique markets of Lucca, Carrara, and Florence, where she collected unusual objects to incorporate in some of her stone sculptures. Twenty-five years of traveling to Italy have passed, and Carolann continues to return to her home and studio there to create her famous stone sculptures.  In her Dallas studio, she also builds her, one-of-a-kind Assemblage artworks, made with unique antiques and stone. Carolann’s award-winning sculptures are exhibited internationally and locally, and are represented in public, corporate, and private collections around the world.
