Do you ever get the feeling "FAMILY VALUES" are producing censored art in museums? For a woman fertility is a very important part of our life. Dealing w our uterus and the blood that flows from a woman's portal of life is a continual concern and care of the blood is constant 5 days a month.

After seeing W. A. R. ( Woman's Art Revolution), a movie shown in Berkeley CA, I saw the riff between male sterile minimal art and woman's art as it concerns the Portal of Life all women carry. And as for men I do not see a lot of male art addressing their issues related to the generative power they possess and confronting their helplessness of the lack of ability to reproduce themselves.

FERCUNDY is a pictorial of the conflict of MAN and his desire to reproduce. It includes his hormonal desires that cause the physical body to submit to his basic hormonal nature. This sculpture shows the "VIRGINS VEIL" or female portal of life as found in all old church doors.

Beating the heat of summer
And still being a productive sculptor

By Dottie Whiplash.

I go to work in stone sculpture's heaven during the hot summer months.
I work in Oakland CA at a fun 24 hour access sculpture studio, Our Studio, owned by BJ McKinley at 800 Moorpark, 510-632-5280. It is across the street from a stone sculpture supply store, Renaissance Stone, owner Robert Black, 510-638-2404.

There are a number of serious full time artists working in stone, metal, clay, and paint Bill Creitz, Clayton Thiel, Brian Glaze (who is carving life size - The Four Winds in Austin Cream limestone), Don Buchfinch, & BJ.

It’s tons of fun and the owner of the studio, B J McKinnley is very talented and has lots of big tools to help me. We have a building and work under a covered space outside. It really is divine.

Yes it's heaven. The weather is cool between 60 and 85 all summer and no mosquitoes. Since I work outside that makes a huge difference.

I buy marble, translucent alabaster and green soapstone, and pneumatic tools across the street at Renaissance Stone.

It doesn't get any better unless you have an assistant to do your sanding for you. Ha ha!

My art is Jungian-based. After studying surrealism, cubism, and impressionism, I created my own art form called Summism. When I sculpt summistically, I approach the stone looking at the shapes and planes of the rock. Even my classical work, I enjoy using broken planes to enhance the work.

Symbolism is very important in my work. I use symbolism to create both classical and modern art forms. Some of my favorite symbols include: the tantric cube, dice, dominoes, Dallas skyline, Millet’s anglers, Picasso’s harlequin, absinthe and wine glass, the palm tree, sunflowers, Matisse’s rug, the oasis, the clock and the peace mug.

Some of my recent sculptural series are: Modern Bluesmen Heads, The virgin of the Guadalupe, Renoir’s bathers, women with halo and roses, Gods and Goddesses, the nude torso, and the reclining female.

I have begun to carve drawings on marble tablets using contrast and patterns. I also explore icons and archetypes. I like to historically record information in the stone sculpture. Permanence and the quality of the stone are very important.

Braids as Abstract Form by Dottie Whiplash

When I studied in Pietrasanta Italy, my teacher and I carved a white marble female bust from a broken turned column left in the marble dumpster.

Levio carved the braids on the piece in a very formal pattern.

I later studied Bernini's abstract fabric folds in his classical stone carvings like "The Blessed Lodovica Albertoni" in the Altieri Chapel and "The Ecstasy of St. Teresa".

Because very few stone carvers can carve classicially, I wanted to include it in my new "Braid" series but I also like the modern abstract formed of current carvers. So I am using the braids and the broken shapes of each rock with a classical work.

I have carved them in translucent stones and each one is a jewel within itself standing up to 30".

Cameo of Molly the Pianist
Green soapstone
By Dottie Whiplash

I've been studying cameos and this piece of soap stone had some natural glossy places. I used them in Mollys ruffles. Her collar is one of the Jester collars in my Harlequin series.

Molly posed for me and I carved this while she played Brahms at "Strings", classical music hall.  I put abstract piano keys with notes in the ruffles and the border of the piece. There are holes around the base in the back to attach jewels and dangle down  And a hole at the top of cameo to mount it on a rotating pin.

What type(s) of art do you like to create? I am a summistic stone sculptor and painter. Summism uses the exhisting planes of a broken rock. Summistic painting creates three or more planes and creates the work from them. summistic sculpture also incorporates themes, concepts, and styles in the piece of sculpture. Jungism is also part of the art.

Where did you learn to do what you do? I saw the Cistene Chapel at age 8 and spent many years in Nigeria studing the ebony and ivory carvers. I studied stone sculpture in Pietrasanta, Italy. Attended Stephen F Austin and worked as assistant director of Katzen-Browne Gallery in NY.

Tell us about your most important projects. I carved Plenty 4'x6" in pink Portuguesse marble before studing in Italy. I was assistant sculpture of 40' of The Wall in Concordia Kansas in 2007 I carved four Green Soapstone Female Heads recently and was able to create a chain and loosen a link in 2009.

Describe your studio. My studio is a large skylit room with 20' ceilings. Filled with paintings, stone, clay, brick, and aluminum sculpture. My courtyard contains a stone sculpture and sand garden mainly my early work in Indiana limestone. Including the sculpture of THE VIRGIN OF THE GUADELUPE GIVING BIRTH TO WOMANHOOD.

What type of music do you listen to while you work? None. Sometimes blues or chants. Where do you find your inspiration? The cosmos.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Seperate yourself from anger and still your mind. Allow the creative seed to grow in you.

Do you belong to any art organizations? Former president of TSA 94-95 and current member. MAC member.

Do you have a website? No
