In today’s world of high technology and immediate gratification, the ability to hand-carve a realistic figure in stone is becoming a lost art.

I am proud to be one of a handful of artists in America that are capable of doing this.

I once had a university dean of the art department tell me that I was wasting my time as an artist, because carving the figure in stone has already been done.

My response was, where would the world be if someone told Michelangelo, “Don’t bother carving those figures in stone, it’s already been done by the Greeks.”

What if someone told Bernini, “Don’t bother carving those figures in stone, Michelangelo already did that.”

What if someone told Canova, “Don’t carve those figures in stone, Bernini already did that.”

I’ll keep carving figures in stone.  It’s been done for thousands of years.  I guess that means overall, people like it.  My best guess is that the figurative masterpieces of today will still be moving people, uplifting their spirits for a thousand years to come.
