Diocese of Austin

2 June 2011

Dear Artist,

The Diocesan Fine Arts Council (DFAC) is now soliciting religious art of the Judeo-Christian tradition for its sixth exhibit in the Religious Art Gallery at the Pastoral Center for the Catholic Diocese of Austin.  Our current exhibit, which opened in February 2011, has been another overwhelming success.  It has transformed the halls of an “office” building into a more prayerful space reminding both staff and visitors of the presence of the Divine in their daily lives.  Several works of art have sold; and as word continues to spread about the gallery, we hope for more exposure and sales for you, the artist.

To submit religious art for consideration, please email your images to me at mark@landersstudio.com and include the title, dimensions and value.  All two-dimensional work must be professionally framed.  The images must be received by July 15, 2011.  You will be notified either way by July 22, 2011Artwork  accepted for the sixth exhibit needs to be dropped off at the Pastoral Center on Friday, August 19, 2011.  The exhibit will last until February 24, 2012.   Please feel free to pass this call to artists on to anyone you feel might be interested.  You can send them to our webpage at www.austindfac.org so they can better understand our mission.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Religious Art Gallery, I am including a brief description.  The Religious Art Gallery is located in the Pastoral Center at 6225 E. Hwy 290 and is free and open to the public during regular business hours (8-5 M-F).  The Religious Art Gallery has several hundred lineal feet of wall space.  We use a cable system and picture rail to hang the art, so you must be willing to have screw holes added to the back of your frame.   We have space for sculptures, but it is limited.  Signage for the artwork will include the title of the artwork, artist name, a short description (i.e. oil on board) and an indication of “available” (if for sale) or “private collection” (if not for sale).  A hand-out with artist contact information and pricing (if for sale) will be available in the lobby.  The Diocese will not be involved in actual sales – that will be between the artist and the patron – nor will the Diocese receive a commission.  We do ask that the art remain hanging until the end of the exhibit even if it sells.

The DFAC has begun a modest permanent collection and any art donated by an artist and accepted for the permanent collection is automatically considered for the next exhibit.

The mission of the Diocesan Fine Arts Council is to act as a catalyst and lead a renaissance in visual religious fine art with an emphasis on the Judeo-Christian traditions.  Through the many shows we have held, the new Religious Art Gallery and the wonderful work of the artists in Central Texas, I believe we are giving a visible presence to the mystery of the invisible God.

Thank you for considering participating in this next exhibit and for sharing your artistic talents.

Sincerely,
Mark Landers
Co-Chair, Diocesan Fine Arts Council

Creative Art Center of Dallas State of the Arts

An Annual Letter from the Executive Director
and President of the Creative Arts Center of Dallas

Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment for people to discover, develop and express their artistic visions.  Ourvision is to create a place where community arises as we transform the ordinary into the extraordinary through creative experiences.
Thank You for Your Passion!
Enrollment, Membership & Revenue Up at CAC

We are all about creative learning at CAC and we are delighted that you are sharing our journey.  Over the past two years during the economic crisis, we have seen many professionals redirect their careers into the arts.  What may have started as an opportunity for the unemployed or underemployed to stay occupied, or for others, to relieve stress from managing many work projects that used to be handled by co-workers, has turned into to a full fledge DIY movement.  At CAC, we see many people who have discovered latent or dormant artistic ability.  Professional artists already established in one medium are learning about other mediums.  And others are happy simply creating art for their friends and family.

Thanks to the Web, the world has become an open marketplace for artists and artisans.  With Web sites like Etsy, DaWanda, 1000 Markets, ArtFire and Silkfair, people all over the world can see and buy jewelry, sculpture, glass, furniture and ceramics - all handmade.  Etsy alone has grown five-fold since our economic woes began - from 1 million members in 2008 to 5.5 million members now, generating $180 million last year.  Not only is this transforming individual lives and the marketplace, it could transform our economy.

With membership, enrollment and revenue all up in 2010, we were able to further concentrate our attention on programs for our membership.  Last spring we hosted a free Spring Lecture Series for students, members, former students and the general public which included two Artist Talk Backs featuring sculptors David Hickman and David Newton sharing their process.  We also hosted a complimentary portfolio review thanks to curator Gail Sachson.

We hosted a spring membership show at the Cedars Arts Gallery in the Cedars Art District and a fall membership show at the Third Space in downtown Dallas.  For each juried show we had more than 100 entries!

Overall revenue, including program fees, grants, individual giving and fundraisers was more than $583,000 up just 1% over last year.  While income was flat, expenses were down significantly allowing CAC to put aside several thousand dollars in reserves (which is quite remarkable for an arts organization to do in this economy).

CAC welcomed 13 new instructors in fused glass, fiber, drawing, painting, watercolor, ceramics, clay sculpture and even ornamental penmanship.  We also joined forces with Jim Bowman to begin offering blown glass at Bowman Hot Glass Studio.  In addition, we began to sell at a discount premium Bullseye glass and supplies through CAC to our students.  Sadly, we said goodbye to two long-time instructors Earline Green and Becky Johnson in 2010.

We hosted two fundraisers in 2010:  Focal Point:  Art and the City and Rockets to Ray Guns, a Halloween costume party at CAC for members, students and the public.

Support from the Community
Foundation support in 2010 proved to be a challenge for all nonprofits due to the economy.  The Rosewood Foundationcontinued its commitment to CAC with a grant to fund the glass department.  With those funds we built a storage system for up to 72 students, and purchased a new glass polisher and a small kiln.  We were also able to conduct a teacher in-service for Skyline High School.  The George and Fay Young Foundation awarded CAC a grant to produce an unseenamericaproject at Bayles Elementary School for the third consecutive year!  As you may know, we occupy the original Bayles Elementary School building.  During the eight week program, nine young students learn photography skills from a professional photographer.  They learn to shoot, edit and critique their photos.  They also write captions for each photograph that goes into the exhibition and create an artist statement.  The Thomas Charitable Lead Annuity Trust funded CAMP MetalHead last summer, a program combining relevant job skills and quality arts instruction in metal and jewelry for at-risk teens.  Sparks fly for a few weeks each summer as teens create art, take field trips to job sites and artist studios and learn from professional artists and experienced mentors.  The Trust also funded major program improvements in the metal and ceramics departments.  We received continued funding from the Texas Commission on the Arts and funding from the Office of Cultural Affairs of the City of Dallas.  We were also thrilled to be funded for the second time from the social and art groupArt After 5.  This year, we started another partnership with Art After 5, when the group came to the Center to paint bowls for Empty Bowls, the community service project we support for North Texas Food Bank.

Cultivating Creativity
CAC is Engaged!
We were proud to be a part of an exciting first-time program with Big Thought and DISD this past summer in which we "adopted" Bayles Elementary (our namesake school and neighborhood school) to provide eight art instructors who integrated extensive arts instruction with summer school learning for 500 students.  Who knew summer school could be so much fun!  CAC's instructor Vet also collaborated with AIDS Interfaith Network to provide an arts residency in Adrinka printmaking for their clients through the City of Dallas/Office of Cultural Affairs' Community Artist Program.

Again, Thank You for an Amazing Year
Art Enriches Lives and Builds Community
Next week Texans for the Arts will be hosting a conference in Austin focusing on "Leading the Creative Economy".
We believe that the arts represent the identity of a city and a means for us to communicate and reach out to one another, thus bridging cultures.  We also believe we are providing our citizens with lifelong learning opportunities and are developing the creative workforce of the future.  Finally, we are working to positively influence disadvantaged children and youth by offering some of the very best programming in the community for them effectively reducing crime, truancy and gang involvement.  We hope you will join us in 2011 to see how a group of people creating art can build community.

Nate Glaspie
Constructed from found materials, Nate Glaspie's visual art initially seem industrially made. This is contributed through the process of relying on the identity of the found materials he chooses. An Apple keyboard box becomes a painting, periodicals from the 70's become sketchbooks for a continuation of ideas and other materials from stray origins become anew through an artist's sensitive eye.

Tiffany Lynn Wolf
My thoughts around femininity, insecurity, and home drive my work. I use the process of making as a mechanism for coping with the actual reality versus the preconceived ideal - having the control over an evolving process of making and destroying of objects and idea and developing a relationship of sentimentality and rejection.  I am interested in place... in my place... in my impact on my place...

Silenced Suffering: The Comfort Women Project
During the Second World War (1932-1945), hundreds of thousands of Korean women became "comfort women," which is a euphemism for women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army. These women were conscripted into many Asian countries from Korea and imprisoned at the military comfort stations. Since Japan's defeat in 1945, many of them committed suicide or remained in foreign countries instead of returning to Korea, as they were ashamed and attempting to hide from their past. Since Japan's defeat, the comfort women have struggled through the physical and emotional consequences of their enslavement for more than sixty years. To date, only two hundred women have testified about their ordeals out of the estimated two hundred thousand women whose lives were impacted by this experience. They overcame the difficulties of publicly speaking out in hope that their testimony would help prevent history from repeating itself.
Approximately two hundred thousand women were involved in sexual slavery in four hundred comfort stations during this war. In this project, I metaphorically portray the number of the comfort women and their testimonies in order to explore their tragic historical memories.
